My Year To Thrive

"My mission in life is not merely to survive, but to thrive; and to do so with some passion, some compassion, some humor, and some style." ~Maya Angelou

Mental Health Monday: Up & Down, & Through It.

“I don’t like standing near the edge of a platform when an express train is passing through.  I like to stand right back and if possible get a pillar between me and the train.  I don’t like to stand by the side of a ship and look down into the water.  A second’s action would end everything.  A few drops of desperation.”
~Winston Churchill (Quotes on Bipolar)

I share that feeling with Mr. Churchill. I can’t be near a drop without thinking of jumping anymore than I can have a knife without thinking of cutting myself. I avoid guns entirely for those reasons. The image used is Cruikshank Woman Committing Suicide By Jumping Off A Bridge. I found it through on a Google search. The site wouldn’t come up, but the image was still on Google. The snippet said it is considered a public domain image.

So the last week was pretty good, but still a bit up & down.  It started off strong, then dipped the last half.  Though, I feel like I don’t remember much of last week.  I do know that I kept up with my exercise & Weight Watchers, & some housework even when I felt down, or had a binge one day.  I am very proud of that.  Not to mention updating this blog:~)  I’ve been cranky today & am pushing myself to write this.   Also, I only slept about four or five hours last night, so I’m really tired.

With that I think I’ll get to the bullets point review. Continue reading

More Home Non-Cooking

“Health nuts are going to feel stupid someday, lying in hospitals dying of nothing.”
~Redd Foxx~
(Health Quotes)

Honeywheat toast with natural peanut butter & honey blend, a banana, bottled water, & True Lemon.

A simple, filling, fairly low points plus breakfast. (Oh yeah, & it’s pretty cheap, too)

(Who can resist a Red Foxx quote??)

So, I’m switching up my breakfasts this week & figured it would again be the most cooking I do this week.  Hey, this time I used a toaster!  It’s also a chance to highlight a few products I like, & one I’m just trying.

For this week you have toast with peanut butter & honey*, a banana, & water with lemon.  The two products I’d really like to point out here are Jif Natural creamy peanut butter & True Lemon.

I never liked peanut butter until I found natural peanut butter.  Seriously, as a kid I can remember many times I had to sit inside while the other kids played until I finally ate my peanut butter & jelly sandwich under protest.  There were similar issues around corn (I’m nearly 36 years old & still won’t eat corn, & if I get a plate with corn already on it, I won’t eat the food that touches the corn either).

I didn’t start with Jif, I forget what the first brand I tried & liked was, but the Jif is better blended & doesn’t separate as much.  Also, I’m told it doesn’t separate as much if you keep it in the fridge, but it does still separate & when it’s chilled it’s harder to mix up, so I just leave mine out.

And as for True Lemon…love it!  I discovered this a year ago on a freebie site.  It’s individual packets of dehydrated lemon crystals. It does have a few other things mixed in with the lemon juice & lemon oil, but nothing I don’t know what it is.  Put it in your water or tea or whatever, & it tastes just like you squeezed a lemon in it.  Just like it!  That’s what sold me.  Not to mention it doesn’t need to be refrigerated, never goes bad, no chopping, is easier to get into a water bottle, & it travels a whole lot better than lemon wedges.

It’s not sold around here, so I had to order it online, but they seem to frequently run sales, freebies, & shipping offers.  Several big groceries do carry it though.  They have a list of where to get it on their site.

So, here’s the break down with points plus values for all my Weight Watchers:

  • 1 slice Sara Lee Classic Honey Wheat bread, 2pts+
  • 1T Jif Natural creamy peanut butter, 3pts+
  • 1/2T honey/honey blend*, 1pts+
  • 1 banana, 0pts+
  • bottle of water, 0pts+
  • lemon or True Lemon, 0pts+
  1. Toast the bread
  2. Add peanut butter & honey* to toast, & spread evenly
  3. Add lemon/True Lemon to water; shake

And that’s a healthy, filling breakfast for only 6pts+.  Some low fat milk would be good with this too, but I tend to just have water in the mornings (not a coffee or tea drinker, & I have to be careful with drinking milk).  Don’t forget p.b. gives you some healthy oils!  So you’ve got protein, carbs, fats, fiber, a little sweet (honey is good for you!), a fruit, & some water.

Good start to the day, no?  Now let’s go work out!

*I’m ashamed to admit it, but when I went to the store this week real honey was a little out of my price range.  I ended up getting a honey blend for $1.  It’s a blend of honey & corn syrup.  It tastes enough like honey to be in stuff & the nutrition info is the same.  But if you get some on your finger & maybe lick it off, you can taste the corn syrup a little.  Not as good for your body as pure honey, but for $1, at the end of the month I can make do.

Be Gone Cookies! You Have No Power Here.

Blah, so today was not one of my good days.  I had to get up early today for food pick up.  I went to bed early last night, but it took me hours to actually fall asleep.  So I had to get out after maybe four hours of sleep, didn’t have time for breakfast before leaving, & when I picked up the food there was a tub of cookies. right. on. top.  Yeah.  You can imagine where this is going.

I Want To Be A Ballerina

“While I dance I cannot judge, I cannot hate, I cannot separate myself from life.  I can only be joyful and whole.  This is why I dance.”
~Hans Bos~ (Ballet & Dance Quotes)

Ballet is the loveliest thing I have ever seen. Next to baby sloths of course. Image from

I know I’ve mentioned I have always loved to dance.  Specifically, I love ballet.  All I wanted to be growing up was a ballerina, but, alas, when you grow up in the rural south with two full-time working parents & three siblings, you don’t get dance lessons.  I did however take two semesters of ballet in college, & I loved it!  It was just as wonderful as I always knew it would be.  I have never in my life felt as beautiful as I did then.  And you know when you’re fat girl dancing around in front of a wall of mirrors in just a leotard & tights that means something! I’m Too Full:~(

Yuck.  Just wanted to say that.

We had spaghetti for dinner with garlic bread sticks.  I started off fine, but…

You know how sometimes when you go to put up the leftover it doesn’t look like there’s enough to bother with a dish over, so you think, “I’ll just eat that”, then it turns out to be more food on your plate than it looked in the pan?  Yeah.  That was mean putting away dinner.

It’s early in my week, so I had plenty of points to cover it, plus I had a good bit of points left over for dinner to begin with, so points wise I’m good.  I’m just uncomfortably full now & feel blah.  Add drinking the rest of my water on top of that & more blah.  At least it was dinner, so bed time is an excellent excuse to just lie down & let it digest for a while.

My main purpose in writing this here is to hopefully burn this into my mind & try not to repeat this mistake.  I’m a lot better than I used to be though, so there is hope for my poor belly:~)  I have been quite the binge eater & made myself gawd awful sick stuffing my face beyond capacity with no interest in stopping.  The emptiness I was trying to fill could not be sated by foot long chili cheese dogs & fudge cake sundaes*.  Too bad though, because that would be the most awesome cure for depression ever.

Anyhoo, can’t say it won’t happen again, because it probably will, but I can be more mindful of not needing to eat everything – even if it’s already on my plate – & that even a little food will still taste good tomorrow.  Plus, I totally have little storage containers.

*I seriously just spelled this “sundies”.  How country is that?  I am again thankful these errors usually fall under typo rather than not being able to spell.

A Really Good Week! I’m Down In A Good Way:~)

“A wise man should consider that health is the greatest of human blessings, and learn how by his own thought to derive benefit from his illnesses.”
~Hippocrates~ (Health Quotes)

Success is the sum of small efforts, repeated day in and day out

The secret to success (& a really cute motivational poster). From

I was really on point this week!  I ended the week with eleven of my weekly points allowance left over & 32 activity points racked up.  Hurray for me!  At my weigh-in last night I had lost 2.2lbs.  Hurray for me again!  That leaves me just another 4.6lbs to got to meet my first 10% loss.

But as good as the loss is, I’m keeping my focusing on the NSVs (Non-Scale Victories).  I can control what I eat & what I do.  The scale however I have no  control over.  Why yes, I am mentally preparing myself for a bounce next week.  Hopefully it won’t happen, but historically it has been a big issue.  But I’m going to keep making healthy(er) food choices & enjoying my exercise regardless.  Screw you numbers on a scale:~p  You can not defeat me! Reasons Why I <3 Me!

“You can explore the universe looking for somebody who is more deserving of your love and affection than you are yourself, and you will not find that person anywhere.”
(Self-love Quotes)

Pope Morris XI

Pope Morris XI agrees I’m pretty fucking awesome! (I cobbled this together from various pics off the net to amuse some friends. My appologies I don’t remeber where I got them. Especially the t-shirt. That was a cool site.)

A couple of years ago I had a therapist* who wanted me to write down three good things about myself everyday.  My question to him: “Do they have to be different things everyday?”  His answer was of course, “Yes”.  Needless to say I never did that exercise.

At the time, & since then, & before then, I was stumped as to how I could come up with three new things to like about me every day.  Sure, I could come up with three things period.  But every day?  Do you know how many days that is?  It’s a lot!

For this Thursday Things list I have decided to take up the challenge.  Sort of.  It’s just going to be this one day, but I’ll come up with more than three things. Continue reading
