Weekly Review: Sept. 21-Sept. 27, 2014

“A season of loneliness and isolation is when the caterpillar gets its wings. Remember that next time you feel alone.”

I have a few fun things happening on the blog in October:

Another contest! (& there’s still time to enter the current one)
A Halloween mileage challenge
Start C25K

I had a really good week.  I’ve slept well, felt well, been mildly productive, & I have walked for ~40mins every day.  I didn’t walk last Sunday, but I did work with my resistance bands.

My New Favorite Vitamin, More Stuffs, & A Giveaway

Vitamin Wheel

Vitamin Wheel from Medical News Today

Okay, I’m going to wrap up the last three days of fish oil, inositol, & spearmint tea by reviewing various other things I’ve tried recently.

Let’s start with the basics: multivitamins.

For years I took One A Day’s Women’s multi, switching to Wal-Mart’s Equate version at some point.  They were vitamins.  Honestly, I could never tell a difference between taking them or skipping them.  However, I could tell if I took them on an empty stomach.  They have plenty of iron.  Always take iron with food.  It will tear your stomach up.  I also tried a OAD formulated for energy.  It made me sick, as most energy-touting pills do.

I looked at whole food vitamins at some point, but they cost too much to be practical for me.  However, recently I tried Alive! Once Daily Women’s Ultra Potency from Nature’s Way. From their listing on Swanson’s:

Nature’s Way Alive! Once Daily Women’s Ultra Potency is nutrition you can feel with more energizing nutrients from more natural sources than other multi-vitamin brands. This unique formula delivers 26 fruits and vegetables, extra B-vitamins for energy, and special nutrients for breast health, urinary health, and hair, skin and nail health. Contains no salt, sugar, yeast, wheat grain, dairy products, artificial flavorings, colors or preservatives.

I could tell a difference right away.  My mood & energy have improved.  It’s not dramatic, so not making me feel weird.  I just feel normal, more motivated.  This is my new vitamin.  I ❤ it.  At $10.99 for a two months supply, it’s pricier than what I was taking, but it’s still not bad.  Definitely worth it IMHO.  That’s a lot cheaper than similar vitamins.

Fish Oil & Freebies!

Research has suggested that omega-3 fatty acids, or essential fatty acids (EFAs), can help lower triglycerides, slow the hardening of arteries, regulate heartbeat, and lessen the risk of death in people with known heart disease. It’s also possible that the omega-3 group may aid in treating depression… A few promising studies suggest that natural sources of omega-3s — especially fish oil — may help bring mood back into balance.

I have been researching & trying a lot of different vitamins & supplements, & have been intending to write about them here.  Ta-da!  I’m finally doing it.  I figure fish oil was a good place to start.

A lot of research has been done into fish oil in the last couple of decades.  It has been shown to be helpful for several physical issues, but the research into its use for mental health has been less certain.  Some studies say it does, some say it doesn’t.  There’s plenty of anecdotal evidence out there to support whichever stance you prefer.  The Mayo Clinic’s site rates it an A on the physical health issues, but only a C when it comes to Bipolar Disorder.

I dug up a plethora of links on the issues, including what I wrote previously on fish oil & Bipolar Disorder, so there are lots there if you want to do some digging of your own.  I’ve included three research oriented links from the last year at the bottom.  They are the ones I used writing this.

10 reasons why it Was Worth Getting Out Of Bed Today

I find it immensely helpful to look at lists of days past and see that there was always something that I gained from getting out of bed, even if it was just a cup of tea or experiencing a fortunately timed gust of a warm breeze.
~Anxiety Cat

Anxiety Cat | If any of you ever have trouble getting out of bed…

As I have in many years past, I have started a paper journal of sorts for the year.  I have a list of things to track & it’s always fun to see how far I get each year. ;~)  It started when a therapist several years ago wanted me to write down three things I liked about myself every day.  It had to be three & no, I couldn’t use the same things every day.  It seemed like a daunting task.  I’m still threatened by the idea of having to come up with three reasons to like myself every day, but one is manageable.

This year my daily list involves:

  • Something I Like About Myself
  • Three Goals For Today
  • Something Good About Today
  • Something I Love
  • Something I Am Afraid Of
  • What Made Me Anxious Today

If you listen to the Mental Illness Happy Hour, you probably recognize the love/afraid of items.  I was inspired to track my own list of loves & fears by the show.  I am hopeful adding the list of things that make me anxious will help me tame the beast by getting those things out of my head & onto paper where I can see just how silly they are.  My list gives me something to think about in the morning & at night which I like.  I get to plan ahead & reflect back on the day.

I found the worksheet above on tumblr & thought I would share it here for anyone who needs a little nudge from time to time.

Enjoy & I would love to hear if this helps anyone, or if you do something similar!

Virtual CurveFest — Curvy Yoga

Since Anna Guest-Jelley had to cancel her real world Curvefest this year, she has graciously decided to offer it up virtually & for FREE.  It will be held via Ustream on Sat, Nov. 10, 2012.

In her own words:

CurveFest is a body lovin’ bonanza. We’ll be doing gentle yoga, with options for people of all shapes, sizes, ages & abilities. We’ll also be building the bridge from body awareness to body acceptance and love through guided reflections and even creating your own MATifesto.

It will be broken into three sessions:

Session 1: Building Your Self-Love Foundation through Yoga – reflection, intention, gentle curvy standing practice
Session 2: Why Yoga is a Great Tool for Body Acceptance – discussion, guided reflection, create your own MATifesto
Session 3: Taking Self-Care with You – checking in, gentle curvy seated practice, next steps, extended relaxation, celebration

I’ve talked about wanting to get back into yoga, so this seemed like the perfect way to get started.  After signing up I received a detailed email with sign-in info & a list of things I might want to have available that day.

My Car partially uncovered during The Great Blizzard of 2011

My car partially uncovered. I know that counts as exercise!

Let me just say I’ve been pretty much useless this week.  I haven’t been able to get out of the house all week & so I’ve sat around working on this blog, setting up a Twitter, & generally farting around online.  I did manage to get in three days of exercise though, & I tracked every day faithfully.  I went over points on three days, but still ended the week with plenty of weekly points left & never had to touch my activity points.  I’m claiming that as a success!
